Observing the plants
Site research is often considered as one of the most important first steps in a studio project. The following four ways of observing the site ecology are what I have experimented for my studio projects. The scale of each project varies from University campus to Museum courtyard, from one city block in midtown Houston to urban Buenos Aires. Depending on the diversity of ecology and availability of sampling at site visit, the research method varies as well — from collaging bird-eye view through photographs to collecting individual leaves, from cataloging tree types in section and plan to speculating seasonal changes and labor input in axon. Architectural representational drawings have become an important method for botanical research and presentation, therefore leading towards rich information production for a deeper understanding of the site condition, plants specifically.
